Rumours and News

  • Manchester United allegedly remain interested in Joshua Zirkzee, but “the high commission involved in any deal is complicating the situation.” My read on this from the agent perspective back when we started tracking it is delivering sheer joy. 🍿

  • For those who have been following StatsBomb since the beginning, you probably remember that Memphis Depay was once judged a top 3 young talent in the world [at the same time as Alvaro Morata]. This was before moving to Manchester United and irritating Wayne Rooney by showing up for a reserves game driving a Rolls Royce.

Memphis is 30 now, and spent the last year and a half at Atletico Madrid before becoming a free agent this summer. I hadn’t looked at his stats since he left Barcelona, but he was both pretty good at Madrid, and barely played. They are clearly not trying to help us do our job. Going back to Barcelona, he was fairly good when out on the wing, and less good as a pure CF (not a surprise).

The question is what are you going to get now, and is the headache worth the hassle? Because Memphis is eternally a little bit of a hassle. He’s always been a good creative attacker, even if he’s a little too willing to shoot from range, and he’s a capable scorer, though certainly not a traditional number 9 profile. If the wages are reasonable, I lean toward yes, even for Champions League teams. That said, I’m not entirely sure how much pace is left in the tank.

  • Spurs have moved ahead of Aston Villa in the anti-“race” to sign Weston McKinnie. Feel free to use this factoid to irritate your Spurs friends.

  • Vangelis Pavlidis to Benfica is done. The (now) former AZ Alkmaar player sounds like someone who used to be married to Johnny Depp, but transitioned out of that complicated relationship into the much simpler world of football. I know he did it against the squishy underbelly of the Eredivisie, but Pavlidis put up NUMBERS in both goalscoring and pressures in that league.

Part of me feels strongly like Premier League and Champions League clubs missed a trick on this one. While another part of me has sword off ever signing another centre forward straight from the Eredivisie.
